Red cell indices
Four calculated values describe the size and hemoglobin content of your red cells, and they are the clues that help pinpoint the type of a red-cell problem.
MCV (mean corpuscular volume) is the average size of your red cells — are they smaller than usual, normal, or larger than usual. MCH and MCHC describe the average amount and concentration of hemoglobin per cell. RDW (red cell distribution width) measures how much your red cells vary in size from one another; a high RDW means the cells are unusually uneven, which can be an early clue in certain anemias. White blood cell count and the differential
The white-cell portion measures your immune-cell army — its total size and, on a differential, its composition.

Why ranges differ by lab, age, and sex
If two labs report your identical blood a little differently, both can still be “right,” and here is why.
Each laboratory establishes its own reference intervals based on its equipment and the population it serves, so the “normal” band can shift slightly from one lab to another.
